The College of Medicine promotes and improves the health of the citizens of Nebraska by advancing biomedical and health sciences and providing the highest quality education, patient care, research and community service.

Relentless Focus on Student Access and Success

The college is able to meet only about 10% of student financial need through scholarships. This lack of financial support may impact students’ choice of school, losing top Nebraska students to other medical schools that are willing to offer greater scholarship packages. Scholarships also help UNMC recruit the best, brightest and most diverse student body.

Enhancing Faculty, Academic and Clinical Excellence

Endowed chairs and professorships are invaluable for recruiting and retaining the best faculty. Private support draws the finest clinicians and scientists to UNMC, helping to advance knowledge through research, encourage the professional development of fellow physicians and improve patient care.

Transformational Research and Innovation

Donor support helps the College of Medicine translate basic science discovery to the patient bedside and to population health. The Child Health Research Institute, the UNMC Cardiovascular Center and several initiatives in cancer, neuroscience and infectious diseases are among the many translational research areas where the college is leading the way, right here in Nebraska.

The nursing shortage has become a serious problem that threatens the very functioning of our health care system in Nebraska and across the country. But at the College of Nursing, our goal isn’t just educating more nurses — it’s educating more nurses who have the best possible training for a field as essential as it is challenging.

Scholarships make a career in nursing accessible to students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Scholarships also help students graduate with less debt, giving them more options for accepting jobs in areas with lower pay but higher need, such as rural Nebraska.

Student Scholarships

The college has a bold goal of doubling the number of student scholarships available to meet the critical workforce needs across the state.

Facilities

UNMC can expand its presence in western Nebraska with construction of a building for the College of Nursing in Scottsbluff that will be shared with the colleges of dentistry and allied health professions. The new facility would allow for the increased enrollment that is so crucial for rural health care workforce development.

Endowed Chairs

This valuable support will provide funding for faculty innovations and entrepreneurship, and support the development and expansion of academic programs, including those focused on increasing the rural health care workforce.

Needed Research

Endowing the Center for Patient, Family, and Community Engagement in Chronic Care Management through discovery, dissemination, and diffusion (CENTRIC) will secure permanent funding for the college to continue its research in self-management of chronic conditions.

MMI offers more than 100 services across Nebraska.

Endowed Faculty Positions, Support and Recruitment

Funding for a presidential chair, as well as chairs for the director of research and the director of the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, will provide MMI with the tools to compete on the national and international stage when recruiting the best professionals. In addition, support for professorships within every MMI department will enhance its status as a worldwide leader in the diagnosis and care of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and complex health care issues. MMI’s Department of Psychology, including its Applied Behavioral Analysis program, is well respected in the field. Support for a training program director for MMI’s internships and fellowship programs will allow for continued growth and excellence.

Discretionary Research Funding

MMI conducts innovative studies across the research spectrum. Basic, applied, translational and evaluative research investigations are conducted by each MMI program and discipline. Research at MMI ranges from basic investigations in developmental neurosciences, such as the genetics of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders, to applied studies of treatments for disorders of movement, severe behavior, feeding, communication, sleep, pediatric pain and learning. Only through donor support can MMI expand its research initiatives. Research funding for pilot projects will serve as a catalyst for the discovery of much-needed diagnosis, treatment and prevention measures that will improve the quality of life for those MMI serves and their families.

Undergraduate Scholarships and Graduate Student Support

The ability to provide additional financial support will help to attract gifted and inquisitive minds to UNMC and MMI because it will allow students to obtain their education without the burden of oppressive debt after graduation. MMI’s robust Applied Behavior Analysis programs, in partnership with UNMC and the University of Nebraska at Omaha educational programs, will help to build the pipeline to increase the number of professionals in Nebraska and beyond who diagnose and treat mental and behavioral health issues. The ability to fund these opportunities for students internally will enable MMI to work with UNO, UNK, UNL and UNMC to recruit, train and retain these professionals to serve Nebraskans.

The College of Pharmacy is a leader in experimental therapeutics, drug discovery and drug delivery and is seeking resources that will allow it to transform discoveries into clinical trials and into the treatment of diseases. With the cost of tuition and competition for students, it is essential for the College of Pharmacy to offer more scholarship and internship assistance. In addition, the college will partner with Nebraska Medicine to establish a rural health system pharmacy residency program to address a shortage of pharmacists in rural Nebraska.

Enhancing Faculty, Academic and Clinical Excellence

Despite its success, the college has no fully endowed chairs and just three endowed professorships. Establishing an endowed chair in clinical and translational research will allow UNMC to recruit and retain highly sought-after faculty. Attracting elite faculty is imperative to expanding drug discoveries and improving health care.

Transformational Research and Innovation

Creation of the UNMC Center for Drug Discovery and Development will enhance, organize, oversee and grow drug research at UNMC. This state-of-the-art center will help develop and advance all stages of development, from basic discovery to translational efforts. The center will provide guidance and support to help advance early-stage drug discovery projects.

This ranks among the lowest student financial assistance available from colleges of pharmacy in the Big Ten. To better compete for the best and brightest students, it is essential for the UNMC College of Pharmacy to offer more scholarships to help attract the next generation of pharmacy professionals.

Endowed Chair in Clinical and Translational Research

Establishing an endowed chair in clinical and translational research will allow the College of Pharmacy to recruit and retain the best faculty minds. While the college has demonstrated tremendous success, private philanthropic support will allow the college to fully endow a chair and establish additional endowed professorships among its faculty. Student Scholarship Support

To address this shortage, COPH aims to recruit and retain a diverse and outstanding student population by offering targeted merit- and need-based scholarships and providing students with global engagement and study abroad opportunities.

Expanding Health Security and Infectious Disease Prevention and Control

By improving health security, the college can increase the chances that people will be healthy and resilient — both physically and mentally — following a disaster. Graduate students play an essential role in the advancement of innovative research at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. The center aims to recruit and retain the best and brightest students whose abilities contribute to the cancer center’s goals in critical research areas.

Enhancing Faculty, Academic and Clinical Excellence

Faculty members at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center come from around the globe, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to share with their students and impact the lives of patients. Endowed faculty positions are essential to attracting and retaining these talented clinical and research scientists.

Transformational Research and Innovation

Nationally recognized experts at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center are conducting groundbreaking research with the potential to transform cancer prevention and treatment and ultimately defeat cancer. These critical research areas include: precision medicine, targeted drug discovery, immunotherapy, cancer prevention and cancer survivorship. Private investment will build on this work and support several disease-specific cancer research centers of excellence, including breast, lung, pancreatic, prostate, leukemia and lymphoma, skin and colon.

But cancer continues to devastate millions of families each year, and there is more work to do. With private support, the world-class experts at the cancer center can continue their lifesaving work. Together, we can move closer to our goal of eliminating cancer in Nebraska and beyond.

TOP CAMPAIGN PRIORITIES

Research Program Development Funds

Funds will bolster expansion of cancer research centers of excellence in strategic priorities and advance research in precision medicine, immunotherapy, drug discovery, cancer prevention and survivorship.

Nebraska Clinical Trials Network

Funds will support research nurses, data managers and the clinical research infrastructure at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and at hospitals and clinics so all patients across Nebraska have access to clinical trials.

Community Outreach and Engagement

Private support will enhance community partnerships to develop increased access to state-of-the-art cancer screening and cancer care.

Endowed Chairs and Professorships

Funds will be used to recruit 10-15 new cancer research faculty members to the cancer center, offering an essential means to attract and retain talented and experienced teachers, researchers and scientists.

Graduate Student Support

Philanthropic support will provide funding for annual stipends and research expenses for 10 cancer research graduate and postgraduate students/fellows, making a significant impact on the research capacity of the cancer center and its ability to attract the best and brightest minds.
