Enhancing Faculty and Academic Excellence

The merit of a university is best measured by the quality of its faculty. Recruiting and retaining high-quality staff is imperative to strengthening the libraries’ assets. Support for endowed faculty positions will enhance the libraries’ ability to provide dynamic services, exceptional personnel, unique and extensive collections, and accessible spaces and environments.

Transformational Research and Innovation

Open educational resources — free textbooks and other course materials — are a campus priority. UNO Libraries are looking to further engage Omaha through journal access, resource upgrades and improved digital engagement. This includes access to the USC Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive, which has more than 55,000 primary source testimonies of survivors and witnesses to crimes against humanity, including the Holocaust.

Student Support

Private funding for scholarships can help UNO recruit and retain the best and brightest minds. Additional support for open education resources can provide free textbooks and learning resources to an even greater number of students. Expanding and updating technology in classrooms and other learning spaces, especially the Criss Library Creative Production Lab, is vital for students.

Endowed Chairs and Professorships

With increased funding for endowed chairs and professorships, faculty recruitment and retention will elevate the excellence of the university. Faculty members play a critical role in the success of UNO’s students and overall research and engagement enterprises.

Equipment, Facility and Technology Upgrades

Enhancements, renovations and improvements to facilities as well as upgrades to technology and equipment are essential to maintaining the libraries’ position as a key recruiting showcase for UNO. Technology advancements will also allow the libraries to partner with prospective companies to archive their histories and audiovisual materials.

Faculty Support Programs and Academic Program Support

Professional development contributes to improving retention, building confidence, improving efficiency and reenergizing staff. Ever-changing technology, new modalities of instruction and new services require UNO Libraries’ staff to constantly renew their skills and education.

IS&T’s Learn and Earn Initiative will provide all students with the opportunity to pursue and complete their degrees with minimal cost barriers and access to experiential learning opportunities to help launch their IT careers. Enhancing Faculty and Academic Excellence​

Given the critical role instructional faculty play, a fund that will allow instructional faculty to obtain certificates and attend technical and educational conferences to continue to upgrade both their technical and instructional skills would be beneficial for faculty. In addition, teaching and research chairs will reward instructional faculty who support innovation.

TOP CAMPAIGN PRIORITIES

Peter Kiewit Institute Expansion

To address Nebraska’s workforce challenges, UNO must build its capabilities to increase enrollment in high-demand areas such as technology and engineering. A physical expansion of PKI will add 61% more square footage, provide modern spaces and opportunities for students and help to forge a stronger partnership with the Omaha business community. This project also represents an investment in the continued evolution and growth of UNO and the state’s economic future. The expansion will house student support systems like the Hub and tutoring centers.

Student Scholarships

The College of IS&T is committed to the idea that every student has the chance to succeed. Scholarships will assist with the recruitment, retention and completion of degree programs. This will include scholarships like the Opportunity and Access Scholarship for IT Students (OASIS) fund.

Instructional Faculty Support/Teaching Chairs

IS&T seeks to establish a fund that will allow instructional faculty to obtain certificates and attend technical and educational conferences to continue to update and upgrade their technical and teaching skills. Teaching chairs will reward instructional faculty who support educational innovation while creating an incentive to retain top, and particularly diverse, talent.

Research Collaboratoriums

IS&T faculty are involved in impactful research spanning various domains, such as leveraging Artificial Intelligence for pancreatic cancer diagnosis, utilizing sensors and visualizations to assess the state of our nation’s bridges and fostering children’s interest in tech through educational games. To support their endeavors, IS&T has established six collaboratoriums. These collaboratoriums provide stipends to students engaged in research, facilitating their attendance at conferences to showcase their work.

State-of-the-art infrastructure supports a world-class education. Funds to support renovating space currently used by radio and television in the CPACS building will allow for new classrooms, faculty and staff offices and a welcoming student lounge to facilitate collaboration and connection.

Faculty and Academic Excellence

Excellent faculty inspire a love of learning and passion for causes. They provide intellectual leadership for communities that transforms societies. Funds to enhance faculty and academic excellence will provide endowed chairs and professorships and stipends for conferences and professional development.

Transformative Research

Funds to accelerate transformative research will support the college’s research initiatives in business, informatics and gerontology; will advance research into assisting vulnerable populations that have experienced war, crime, displacement and exploitation; and will enhance the Center for Public Affairs’ ability to provide data, policy research and advice as a think tank model for the Nebraska Legislature.
